ISCP, workplace assessments and surgical ARCP

Connect daily feedback with your learning agreement and evidence of progression.

Know what each assessment is for

ISCP supports surgical curriculum and assessment records. Case-based discussion explores reasoning about a case; observed encounters and procedural assessments provide feedback on performance. The Multiple Consultant Report, or MCR, brings supervisors’ judgements together against high-level curriculum outcomes. Use the assessment method that fits the learning task.

Agree goals and collect evidence steadily

At the start of a placement, discuss your learning agreement and practical opportunities. Request observation close to the event so feedback is specific. Record accurate logbook entries and use assessments to identify the next stage of supervised development. Numbers alone do not demonstrate readiness for every responsibility.

Prepare for review with your supervisor

Before ARCP, check the current curriculum requirements, local checklist, supervisor reports and any previous action plan. Identify missing evidence early. Ask how feedback from clinical work, MCRs, assessments and other activity informs the overall judgement. If a development need is identified, agree a specific action, a way to assess improvement and a review date.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

Your next steps

Suggested preparation checklist

  1. Agree a learning plan at the start of the placement.
  2. Seek observation and feedback during routine work.
  3. Keep the portfolio and logbook current.
  4. Review reports and previous actions before ARCP.
