Discuss the need early
Less than full time training, out-of-programme arrangements and support processes are governed by national and local guidance. Start with your supervisor and training programme team. Explain what you need, the proposed timing and any effect on current objectives. Approval and planning requirements differ between arrangements.
Separate the practical questions
A useful meeting covers the training plan, rota arrangements, supervision, assessment dates and how progression will be reviewed. Ask which decisions belong to the employer and which belong to the deanery or training programme. Do not assume an examination deadline or completion date changes automatically when your working pattern changes.
Respond constructively to difficulties
If feedback highlights a concern, ask for concrete examples and an agreed development plan. Record the support offered, what improvement would look like and when it will be reviewed. Use local professional support, occupational health or educational support services where appropriate. Keep communication focused and involve the people best placed to help. The Gold Guide provides the national framework; your programme confirms the process that applies to you.
