Audit, quality improvement and teaching that make a difference

Choose manageable projects, measure their effect and record your contribution.

Start with a real problem

Ask the clinical or education team which problems matter to patients or colleagues. A small project with clear ownership is often easier to complete than a large project without support. Agree the purpose, scope, supervision and any local approval required before collecting data or introducing a change.

Choose a method that fits

For audit, identify a relevant standard and assess practice against it. For improvement work, define a measurable aim and test changes in the local setting. For teaching, identify learners’ needs, set learning outcomes and choose a way to evaluate learning. These are planning suggestions; use your organisation’s governance processes.

  • Define the starting position and a realistic outcome.
  • Record what you personally contributed.
  • Use proportionate measurement and protect confidential information.
  • Agree who will continue the work when you rotate.

Keep evidence of the effect

Present the findings to the team and explain both improvements and limitations. Record feedback, changes made and any further measurement. Recruitment frameworks may value these activities differently, so check the applicable year’s criteria. The strongest interview discussion explains why the work mattered and what you learned, rather than listing certificates.
