Establish eligibility first
The 2027 General Surgery ST3 person specification requires evidence of core surgical competences through an accepted route and completion of MRCS by examination by the initial-offers deadline. It also specifies registration, career-history and other requirements. Read the full document; a summary cannot confirm an individual applicant’s eligibility.
Build an evidence map
Create a table linking every requirement to a document and a deadline. Keep eligibility evidence separate from achievements used in selection. If an alternative certificate is needed, arrange assessment and sign-off early rather than assuming a consultant can verify your entire record at short notice.
Use the correct recruitment year
General Surgery ST3 is not the same process as every other surgical ST3 specialty. Check the current application handbook, scoring guidance, prioritisation rules and interview instructions. Some pages may still describe an earlier round; use year-labelled documents and seek clarification from the recruitment office where information conflicts.
- Keep a complete dated employment history.
- Check MRCS completion and result timing.
- Prepare clear evidence of your personal contribution.
- Review Oriel messages and the official timetable throughout the round.
Map each requirement to a deadline
Specialty Training year 3 (ST3) is a higher training entry point for general surgery. The 2027 person specification distinguishes requirements that must be met at application from those that apply by the initial-offers deadline or the start of the post. Create a dated evidence plan instead of treating every requirement as due on the same day.
For the 2027 round, the published specification requires full GMC registration at application and a licence to practise when the post begins. MRCS by examination is required by the initial-offers deadline. These examples are not the complete eligibility list: read every section of the current person specification and check any changes.
| Record | What to capture |
|---|---|
| Requirement | The exact criterion in the current person specification. |
| Evidence | The document or assessment that demonstrates it. |
| Deadline | The stage by which the criterion must be met. |
| Next action | Who needs to review or complete the evidence, and when. |
Check the route used to demonstrate competence
Applicants may come from different training and employment backgrounds. Use the person specification to establish which route applies to you and what evidence is accepted. If an alternative certificate is needed, read the current certificate and signatory guidance early. A generic employment reference or job title does not automatically demonstrate the required competencies.
Do not confuse the Certificate of Readiness to Enter Specialty Training (CREST), which relates to foundation competence, with the alternative certification used for entry to higher surgical training. Give an appropriate supervisor time to assess the evidence and discuss any gaps before a signature is needed.
Prepare a clear account of your development
Alongside eligibility, organise examples that show how you work, learn and respond to feedback. Choose examples you can discuss accurately: what your responsibility was, what happened, what you learned and what changed afterwards. Keep clinical examples anonymised and avoid presenting team achievements as work you completed alone.
For interview preparation, use the current general surgery recruitment guidance. Practise explaining your reasoning, prioritising problems, recognising limits and escalating appropriately. Review your application before interview so that your answers and supporting evidence are consistent. Coursemia course enquiries can help you explore preparation options; formal eligibility decisions remain with the recruitment team.
