Use the correct certificate
The Alternative Certificate of Eligibility to Enter Higher Surgical Training is an accepted route for demonstrating core surgical competences in the General Surgery ST3 2027 person specification. This is different from CREST, which addresses foundation capabilities for relevant specialty-entry applications. One form does not replace the other.
Plan evidence and supervision
Download the current certificate from the official recruitment page and read the signatory and evidence instructions in full. Arrange a discussion with an appropriate supervisor about which capabilities are already supported and which need further observation. Job duration and operative totals alone do not establish every capability.
Complete the process before the deadline
Work through the document systematically. Agree how missing evidence will be obtained and leave time for verification. Ask the recruitment office about ambiguous requirements rather than using an old form or assuming acceptance. The alternative certificate is an eligibility document: it does not itself award a training number, guarantee selection or establish specialist registration.
- Identify the exact form for the intended specialty and year.
- Check signatory eligibility and the required relationship to your work.
- Map supporting evidence to each capability.
- Check every declaration and signature before submission.
