Understand the role of the examination
The intercollegiate specialty fellowship examinations are administered through the JCIE. For General Surgery, Section 1 assesses knowledge through written single-best-answer papers and Section 2 assesses clinical application through the specialty’s examination format. Check the current specialty regulations and eligibility requirements before applying.
Prepare beyond the examination
Passing the relevant fellowship examination is part of a wider training and assessment process. Review the current certification requirements with your supervisor and programme team. Clinical capabilities, operative experience, assessment evidence and professional development all need appropriate review; an examination pass alone does not award a CCT.
Work backwards from the next decision
Create a plan covering the application window, references, examination preparation, workplace evidence and review dates. Discuss gaps early enough to arrange suitable clinical exposure. Use the JCIE calendar for live dates and fees rather than relying on an old revision timetable. JCST makes certification recommendations to the GMC after the applicable requirements and approvals have been met.
