PLAB, the MLA and GMC registration

Understand how licensing examinations differ from surgical membership and recruitment assessments.

Different examinations answer different questions

PLAB helps the GMC assess international graduates seeking registration through that route. It is compliant with the Medical Licensing Assessment requirements. UK medical students take the MLA as part of their degree. MRCS is a surgical postgraduate examination and MSRA is a recruitment assessment; these have different purposes.

Check the registration route that fits you

The GMC also describes routes involving sponsorship or acceptable postgraduate qualifications. Holding a qualification does not automatically confer registration. Use the GMC’s current application guidance to check your primary medical qualification, internship, English language evidence and other requirements for the route you intend to use.

Plan registration separately from recruitment

Make a checklist for the GMC application and a separate one for a training or employment application. Verify when registration and a licence to practise are required. Confirm evidence validity and document verification before booking travel or committing to an examination sequence. If your circumstances do not clearly fit the published route, ask the GMC for guidance.
