F1 and F2 portfolios: preparing for ARCP

Organise learning evidence throughout the year and avoid a last-minute scramble for supervisor reports.

Start with your actual requirements

ARCP is the Annual Review of Competence Progression. Use the current UKFPO curriculum, national checklist and your foundation school instructions together. F1 and F2 requirements differ. Do not use a checklist from an older cohort without checking it against the current guidance.

Keep evidence useful and visible

Use a simple tracker with the requirement, evidence location, responsible person and target date. Distinguish an assessment you have requested from one that has been completed. Discuss gaps at supervisor meetings rather than waiting for the submission deadline.

  • Check placement and end-of-year supervisor reports.
  • Review assessments, feedback and curriculum coverage.
  • Record teaching and learning in the required format.
  • Keep reflections focused on learning and anonymise clinical details.

Plan the final review

Work backwards from the school’s evidence deadline and allow time for supervisors to review your record. The UKFPO learning log guidance specifies at least 60 hours of learning in each F1 and F2 year, pro rata for LTFT doctors; check the current rules on qualifying learning. If evidence or progress is incomplete, ask your supervisor what action is needed and document the agreed plan.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
