F1 & F2

F2 to surgery: planning your next step

Compare CST applications, clinical fellow posts and development time while keeping eligibility in view.

Choose the next role for a reason

After F2, doctors may apply for training or take a role that develops clinical, academic or teaching experience. Compare options by the supervision, learning opportunities and responsibilities they provide. A job title alone does not confirm that a post is part of an approved training programme.

Map the application before collecting evidence

Read the current CST person specification early. Eligibility requirements, how experience is counted and selection criteria can change. Extra time in a service role is not automatically advantageous for every application. Make a dated career history and check how your proposed experience fits the rules.

  • Separate eligibility documents from scored portfolio evidence.
  • Plan examination preparation around the rota.
  • Choose projects you can complete and explain clearly.
  • Ask potential supervisors about teaching, theatre access and assessment support.

Keep a realistic backup plan

Identify roles you would genuinely accept and compare location, rota and educational support. Prepare a concise CV and references before deadlines. If you need to demonstrate foundation capabilities through CREST, confirm the correct form and signatory requirements early; it is a formal evidence process, not a substitute for completing missing capabilities.
