Preparing for the CST interview

Practise structured reasoning, professional judgement and a clear account of your portfolio.

Know the published format

The 2027 guidance describes two 15-minute stations: management and clinical, and portfolio. The management and clinical station includes a management scenario and two clinical scenarios. The portfolio station includes a three-minute prepared presentation, questioning and portfolio questions. Follow the recruitment team’s instructions for the precise presentation brief.

Practise reasoning aloud

Use original practice scenarios with a colleague. Explain what you need to clarify, what takes priority and when you would seek senior support. In professional scenarios, discuss the people affected, immediate safety, communication and appropriate escalation. Aim for a coherent answer that responds to the question rather than a memorised speech.

Make practice measurable

Ask your partner to comment on structure, clarity, time management and whether your answer addressed the task. Repeat the same exercise after applying the feedback. For the portfolio, be ready to explain your individual contribution and limitations. Before the remote interview, complete the platform checks, prepare identification and follow the rules on the room, recording and permitted materials.
